Wild yam (Dioscorea Villosa) has traditionally been used to treat indigestion and nausea, to stimulate gall flow and prevent gallstones, to reduce menstrual cramps and other discomforts related to the menstrual cycle and menopause. For best results, use wild yam continuously. It can be combined with other herbs.

Mexican Wild Yam from British manufacturer Seventh Wave contains the entire wild yam root. Being a whole herb you get better results, and with broader health benefits than isolated extracts that are missing the nutritional co-factors found in whole herbs. No additives, fillers or binders are present in this product.

It is a common misunderstanding that wild yam would contain progesterone or that it can be transformed into progesterone in the body. This is not true, but if we quickly look at the story of wild yam we can easily see where the misunderstanding originates.

At the beginning of the 20th century it was both expensive and difficult to produce hormones such as progesterone. The process involved extracting progesterone from the ovaries of cows and pigs and a terrible amount of animals was required to obtain a minimal amount of progesterone.

In the 1940s, however, a man named Russell Marker discovered a much more economical and practical way of producing steroid hormones from a naturally occurring substance that structurally resembles steroid hormones - diosgenin.

Wild yam happens to be rich in diosgenin and Russel Marker created a method for extracting the diosgenin and chemically synthesizing it into exact chemical copies of progesterone and DHEA. This revolutionized the production of steroid hormones and paved the way for the birth control pill.

Today, it is even cheaper to use the substance stigmasterol from soy instead of diosgenin to produce hormones. However, as the soy industry has a major impact on the environment, we prefer to choose non-soy based products.

Wild yam thus contains diosgenin, but it can not be transformed into the body into any hormone. It can however, along with other active substances in wild yam, be useful in relieving for example mentrual cramps, stomach upsets, PMS and menopausal symptoms and wild yam have traditionally been used to alleviate these conditions.

Wild yam also contain phytoestrogenic substances, but neither are these converted into DHEA, estrogen or progesterone. Phytoestrogens can be helpful in situations of estrogen dominance because they can bind to estrogen receptors without necessarily activating them. This can cause the body to modulate its estrogen production, thereby reducing estrogen-related risks and problems associated with fluctuating estrogen such can be experienced in the menopausal transition.
